I first saw “Drake” at the animal shelter, and joked that nobody would adopt him because of his crazy teeth and bugged out eyes.
Days later I couldn’t get him and his depressed look off my mind, and I decided that if he was still there, it was a sign that he was meant to be mine.
On the ride home with him I learned how uncomfortable he was with car rides. He spent the half hour ride sitting in the back seat with his back to me, hiding his face in the corner of the door like a punished child.
He had such a sad personality when I rescued him, and we definitely turned that around in the years that we were blessed with his silly presence. I’ll forever miss him greeting us happily at the front door with a bone, sock, or other “gift” he’d quickly grab nearby.
We even eventually found that he got immense joy from long walks in the woods, and howling with us. He’d bellow so loud he’d be truly exhausted after a good session!
He always looked like he didn’t know how to sit on his butt like a dog. He sat with his legs positioned awkwardly, and his profile (protruding bottom lip, belly and all) looked a lot like the late Alfred Hitchcock.
His new name was perfect, with Harley as a middle name, and we usually just called him “Harley” or “Harley Barley”.
He wasn’t a fan of motorcycles though, and insanely chased anyone on two wheels. He also hated loud noises, so thunder and fireworks had him hiding in the tub regularly.
Although we gave Harley a happy forever home, he always had a “sad” depressed look that we got used to and loved. I always joked that if he had a voice and could speak human, he’d sound like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh…“Ohhh bother”.
Harley began suffering with seizures about a year ago, and his health declined rapidly before the holidays. We are glad we had another Christmas with our fur baby, and we find relief in the fact that our Harley is no longer suffering.
He is survived by his human mom and dad, his sister Kaanja, and his fur brother Anubis
